Reminded me of Zhang Yimou, of a still from Hero…the black palace. I need to see Hero. (Taken with Instagram)

HEY there’s a capella study break tonight starting at 10pm! Under the Mudd ramp!

This will be the first study break I haven’t been in Oberlin for in… quite some time.

I’ll just be over here with my Obertones and Nothing But Treble MP3s on repeat.

Enough.

The reason we all loved albino squirrels as an Oberlin icon was because they belonged to the students. They weren’t an official Oberlin College thing.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

EDIT: Also it looks like the squirrel is trailing bacon.

Adventures in SciFi Hall:

horrorwine:

Today was the housing fair, the time where all Oberlin dorms, program houses, and theme halls make posters and promote themselves to people who still don’t know where they want to live next year. Of course, I was promoting SciFi Hall, with a little help from some hall leaders and residents.

It was awesome. Tay, Kevin, Quinton, Will, Jackson, Joe, Adina, and Bridget showed up. We had banter with Classics Hall. We convinced two girls to make hall their first choice.

But more than anything else, we talked about what a great place hall is. How awesome and close our community is. That we do both stereotypically nerdy things and just weird, off the wall shit. That all of us are involved in so many things like co-ops, and literature magazines, and the circus, and bands. Basically everything on campus has a hall member involved.

Hearing people talk about how great hall is so excellent. Hearing other people heap love on the place I love so much just makes me love it more. I’m ready to leave Oberlin, but I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready to leave hall.

Pro tip: you won’t.

Two notes on teaching an ExCo:

  1. There are very few things more enjoyable than having a group of students you like and respect best your expectations of them.
  2. One of my measures for a good class period is whether we have to kick the students out of the room after the class is supposed to have ended—especially if the class period in question was a two-hour-long discussion class.

Tonight was a good night.

Deciding to be a circus performer halfway through my Oberlin career has so far been the best decision I’ve made since picking Oberlin.

Replying just to put this on people’s Dashboards.

An Unearthly ExCo

Confidential to everyone who cares about the Doctor Who ExCo: our first blog post is up, including a copy of the application we required applicants to fill out and a breakdown of the anonymised responses to the non-personal questions, accompanied by graphs.

We should have our syllabus up soon, but we’ve had to make some last-minute changes due to a misunderstanding with the ExCo Committee, and we want to make sure we’ve got all the problems ironed out before we put it up for everyone to see. It will most likely be up by tomorrow evening.

ExCo Fair!

oberlin-college:

Tonight is the ExCo Fair! 6-8pm in the Root Room! What classes are you hoping to sign up for?

Remember, kids: the correct answer to this question is the Doctor Who ExCo!

See you there.

EXCITED WITLESS

oberlin-college:

oh-theirony:

I am going to Oberlin, the school of my dreams, in twoish weeks. There, I will:

  • sit in on a “Native Languages of the Americas” class
  • sit in on a REAL ETHNOMUSICOLOGY CLASS AOUHTEIUGSDG
  • possibly hear the Soweto Gospel Choir, straight out of South Africa

HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL I can hardly type I am shaking so much

Things you should also do:

  • get a smoothie at Decafe,
  • take a walk through Tappan Square,
  • see an albino squirrel,
  • twirl around in a womb chair,
  • talk to as many students as possible,
  • ???,
  • profit!

Awesome! A couple of points:

  1. I’m hugely envious; as far as I know there was no Native Languages of the Americas class when I first visited—or while I was in school. If there was, boy am I disappointed that I didn’t know about it.
  2. Have fun! The first class I sat in on was an Ethnomusicology class, and it was the students as much as the professor and content who convinced me that Oberlin was the school for me.
  3. Go to Oberlin. It’s the best college there is. :-)
