nightsinwonderland:

newsweek:

“This is an ad for the gun Adam Lanza used to murder 20 children & 6 adults,” Jessica Valenti tweets. “We need to talk about American masculinity.”

Wow guess what’s fucked up?
This.

I just don’t get this. I feel like there’s some significant penis insecurity going on in our society, because personally I’m pretty satisfied with mine and I feel zero need whatsoever for a semi-automatic weapon, but clearly this is working on someone. And the only meaningful imagery in this ad consists of a menacing cock-rifle and an erect snake with a gun on it. That’s right—an erect snake by itself wasn’t phallic enough. They felt the need to put a gun on the part of the snake that wasn’t standing up.
I’ve never felt that I needed anyone’s permission to call myself a man. I’ve always believed that beating someone in a logical argument or helping someone who needed help was far more demonstrative of my manhood than firing a weapon or making sweaty grunting noises while physically assaulting other men.
I thank my family and friends for never making me feel that my manhood was tied to anything but whether I felt like a man. But someone, somewhere—or rather, an awful lot of someones—is getting a very different message.
