Fleeting moments of internet interest.

by Jonas Wisser

Over the last few years, I’ve watched SciFi Hall become an incredibly close-knit family. In talking to other members of that family who have graduated and are about to graduate, I’ve found that we have the common opinion that graduating out of SciFi Hall is really not okay. There are just too many things—from family dinner to Squidmas, and the fact that your worst enemies on Hall will still be closer to you than many of your other friends—that make losing that family after graduation an incredibly lousy proposition.

There are a lot of things we can do about that, and some are already being done; I understand Squidmas this year will see quite a few alumni returning to campus, and Julie and I are working (off and on) on SciFi Hall: A History. The jokes that get thrown around about SciFi Hall resembling a fraternity are getting less jokey and have more and more silent “Hmmmm…”s attached. Personally, I’m curious about the possibility of chartering chapters on other campuses, but that’s beside the point of this post.

One topic that has repeatedly come up in conversations with other (soon-to-be) alums is the possibility of some sort of a SciFi Hall outpost in New York City, whether a commune or an apartment owned by a more-or-less revolving group of alums that always has a couch (or three) open for visiting SciFi Hall relatives.

This idea is too good to let pass anymore. This post marks the beginning of a serious discussion about finding ways to make this happen. Please reblog or reply to it if you’re interested in being part of the unofficial Committee on Establishing SciFi Hall East*.

One thing is for sure: we need a better forum for a permanent, well-archived discussion about this subject. Feel free to include suggestions for that forum in your reblog or reply.

* The name is negotiable. SciFi Hall: Hard Mode, SciFi Hall II: SciFi Harder, and several others have already been put forward. We’ll worry more about a permanent name once we actually have a concept and maybe some money to put toward it.
