Fleeting moments of internet interest.

by Jonas Wisser

I believe education is a universal right. I committed to this program with the understanding that people would have their own opinions about what I have done, who I am and what I represent.

I am an actor. I am an artist. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a partner. I have a past that some people may not agree with, but it does not define who I am.

I will not live in fear of it. To challenge non-profit education programs is an exercise in futility, counter-productive and anti-educational.

Sasha Grey — I Will NOT Quit Reading to Schoolchildren | TMZ.com (via ultralaser)

Thank you. Seriously. Fuck EVERYONE who dared to suggest she shouldn’t be reading to children. Because what? Because she’s had dirty, nasty sex? Can you show me someone who has never ever done anything sexually adventurous or otherwise improprietous in their personal or professional lives? Because most of us probably wouldn’t fit that bill. Because most of us are human. And this is a human who knows that kids should be read to.

Gurl bye.

It boggles my mind that people want to prevent someone from reading to their children. As far as I can tell, they must believe one of the following blatantly false things:

  1. Sex is contagious. Just by being around Sasha Grey, without knowing anything about her, their elementary school-age children will mysteriously become sexually active.
  2. Sex-positivity makes you a sexual predator. Because Sasha Grey has spoken and acted positively with regard to sex, she is likely to suddenly look up from the book she is reading and proposition or molest the entire class.
  3. Slut-shaming Sasha Grey will get them into her pants. This seems unlikely to work.

But here’s what those engaging in this moral panic are actually saying: “This woman who found something she enjoyed doing, became wildly successful at it, parlayed that success into becoming a ‘serious’ actress, and now wants to help others succeed by reading to them… this woman is a bad person and I don’t want her near my children.”

Props to Sasha Grey for trying to make the lives of children better. Negative props to all the parents who think the porn star they’ve probably watched isn’t good enough to read to their children.
