This quote—at least the substance and the sentiment of it—is not a George R. R. Martin original. No, nor Stephenie Meyer.

I’d link to the original, except that there are any number of writers, readers, philosophers, and generic historical persons who have equated the reading of a book to a new life. Just… let’s not kid ourselves that either Martin or Meyer is sufficiently original to have contributed that quote without drawing heavily on earlier sources.
